SEVEN

It started with a couple of shivers as he lay next to her. Not enough to drag her fully back to consciousness from the delicious deep, sated sleep, but just enough for awareness of his presence to seep in, for the deliciousness of the previous evening to surface in her mind and make her stomach flutter before she sank back down into slumber.

And then there it was again. Soft muttering. This time she opened her eyes and frowned in the dim light of the very early morning. She was curled snugly against Alex, his arm curled protectively around her, her head nestled comfortably in the hollow beneath his jaw. She inhaled the warm, musky scent of his body. The feeling of warmth and safety warmed her to her toes.

She moved up onto one elbow and screwed her eyes up, looking down at his face in the semi-darkness with its strong bone structure. No longer pinned down by her, he suddenly flailed his arms and shouted aloud, making her jump, and she scrambled into a sitting position. Her mind backtracked madly to the day they met—had it really only been a week or so ago? He’d fallen asleep in her flat while she worked. His sleep had been disturbed then too.

She leaned across and clicked on the lamp on the bedside table. Deep in sleep, he didn’t wake. And little wonder—he was clearly so sleep-deprived that once sleep had him in its grasp it wouldn’t let go easily. Worry twisted in her chest as she watched a frown cross his face. Beads of perspiration shone on his brow. Muttering kicked back in, louder this time. Vague, garbled words, none of it intelligible.

Unable to bear the anguished twisting of his body a moment longer, she reached a hand out to shake his shoulder, and when that didn’t work she began patting his cheek lightly.

‘Alex?’ she ventured.

His arms flew back against the headboard and a strangled shout that was leaning towards a scream left his lips. In a panic, Lara did the only thing she could think of.

The dream had Alex right in its dark grasp, fear and despair pelting through his veins as he staggered through the smoke, tasting its acrid bite at the back of his throat as he tried to call out for Sam, desperately searching for him and for their driver.

And then a sudden flood of icy coldness dashed full-force into his face and he was scrambling to sit up, disorientated, water dripping from his face onto the sheets. He screwed his eyes up and tried to focus in the unexpected bright light.

‘What the hell…?’ he spluttered. The fragments of the dream were still whirling in his mind, his heart pounding thickly in his chest.

His eyes slowly began to adjust. Poppy’s flat. His bedroom. Present day. Lara was sitting a few feet away from him on the bed, the sheet clutched against her chest, the empty glass from his bedside table in her hand and an apologetic look on her face that did nothing to mask the underlying fright.
